That blockbuster mentality that makes every fight sound like the Second Coming-and has given us enough "Fights of the Century" to take us through the era of Buck Rogers, 2400 A.D., has now given us a lesser celestial happening called The Showdown. But a recent performance was lesser in name only; not in magnitude. No matter what they called the Leonard-Hearns to-do, it was one helluva fight staged in front of almost 24,000 recently-released mental patients who seemed collectively dedicated to the deafening of America. And, in the end, Sugar Ray Leonard acquitted the hype by soundly thrashing the supposedly invincible Thomas Hearns in a fight with more twists and turns than could be found in an early O. Henry potboiler. In so doing he laid claim to the undisputed welterweight championship of the world. As well to a place among the all-time greats.
